Initial a fost folosit sa insoteasca cirezile din vaile alpine din cantonul Berna, apoi ca si caine de tractiune. In zilele noastre este un foarte iubit caine de familie dar exceleaza si prin abilitatile sale de caine de terapie. Avand un temperament echilibrat, traieste in armonie cu copii familiei dar si cu animalele din gospodarie. Este fericit sa participe la activitatile zilnice si doreste sa-si multimeasca stapanul.
